General Fit Tips

  • 80% of support should come from the band, not the straps
  • The band should be snug on the loosest hook (to allow for stretching over time)
  • Center gore should sit flat against your sternum
  • Underwire should follow your breast root, not sit on tissue
  • Different brands and styles fit differently - don't get attached to a number
  • Consider trying sister sizes if your calculated size feels off

Understanding Bra Fit Problems

Studies suggest that up to 80% of people wear the wrong bra size. Even if you know your measurements, factors like body shape, breast shape, and bra style can affect how a bra fits. Learning to recognize fit problems is the first step to finding bras that truly work for your body.

Our fit diagnosis tool helps you identify specific issues and provides targeted solutions based on common fitting problems and their causes.

Common Fit Issues by Area

Band Problems

Riding up in back: Band too loose - size down

Digging in/painful: Band too tight - size up

Can pull far from body: Band too loose

Band not level: Usually too loose in band

Cup Problems

Spillage/quad boob: Cup too small - size up

Gapping at top: Cup too big or wrong shape

Wrinkling/empty space: Cup too big

Center gore floating: Cups too small

Strap Problems

Falling off shoulders: Band riding up or straps too wide

Digging in/painful: Band too loose or straps too tight

Doing most of the work: Band not providing support

Underwire Problems

Sitting on breast tissue: Cup too small or narrow

Poking at sides: Wire too wide or cup too small

Poking at center: Wire width doesn't match breast root

The Scoop and Swoop Method

Many fit problems can be resolved simply by putting your bra on correctly. The "scoop and swoop" method ensures all breast tissue is properly positioned in the cups:

  1. Lean forward and put on your bra, hooking at the loosest setting
  2. Stand up and reach into each cup with the opposite hand
  3. Scoop all breast tissue from under your arm and toward the center
  4. Swoop the tissue up and into the cup
  5. Adjust the cups and straps for comfort

After scooping and swooping, reassess the fit. You may find you need a larger cup size than you thought, especially if tissue was previously migrating under the band.

When to Get a Professional Fitting

While online tools can help identify problems, a professional fitter can provide hands-on assessment and recommendations. Consider a professional fitting if:

  • You've never been professionally fitted before
  • Your body has changed significantly (weight change, pregnancy, surgery)
  • You're experiencing persistent discomfort despite trying different sizes
  • You need specialty bras (sports, nursing, mastectomy)
  • You wear a hard-to-fit size and want expert style recommendations
